### A word invented in a record store

The name predates the genre. In 1994, Frankfurt DJ Chris Liebing used the word "schranz" to describe the dark, distorted techno he was hunting for in a local record store. On his next visit the owner had filed a whole section under it. The tag spread through Frankfurt's club scene, and by 1999 weekly schranz nights at the U60311 club had cemented it as the name for Germany's hardest techno strain, with the sound spreading across Europe through the early 2000s.

### The sound

Schranz is built from loops: layered, overdriven percussion loops that grind against each other, punctuated by rattles, hoover-like textures and industrial noise. Melodies are rare and breakdowns are brief. A schranz track is a machine that starts, runs at full load, and stops.
