S3RL is what happens when happy hardcore meets the internet: Jole Richard Hughes from Brisbane, Australia, whose pitched-up, tongue-in-cheek rave anthems made him one of the most-streamed hard dance artists in the world, largely outside the scene’s traditional European circuit.

From PlayStation to global fanbase

Hughes started producing in the early 2000s on a home setup that famously began with the PlayStation game Music 2000, sampling and layering his way toward real production. He debuted publicly as S3RL in late 2006, and rather than chasing label deals he went independent, founding Emfa Music and releasing at a pace few in the genre match.

The soundtrack of internet rave culture

S3RL’s formula is unmistakable: classic happy hardcore drive (four-to-the-floor kicks around 170 BPM, helium vocals, euphoric riffs) carrying lyrics about raves, anime, gaming and internet life, delivered with a wink. Tracks like ‘Pretty Rave Girl’, ‘MTC’ and ‘Hentai’ became generational anthems for listeners who found hard dance through YouTube and streaming rather than club flyers. In doing so he became one of the genre’s most important gateway artists, feeding the same revival that keeps UK hardcore and J-core thriving.

The quiet superstar

Despite over half a million Spotify followers, Hughes has kept a low live profile: he played his first in-person show in seven years at HTID in January 2025. The music never paused, though: his catalogue on HDRR runs to more than 460 tracked releases and keeps growing, alongside scene contemporaries like Gammer and Dutch icon Paul Elstak.
