About Darren Styles
Darren Styles is UK happy hardcore’s elder statesman, a producer and vocalist who helped invent the sound in the 1990s and is still headlining and releasing three decades later. Born Darren Mew in Clacton-on-Sea, he has spent his whole career at the fast, euphoric end of happy hardcore.
From UK rave to Force & Styles
Styles came up through the early-1990s UK breakbeat hardcore scene, first with DJ Force & The Evolution. His real breakthrough came as one half of Force & Styles, a duo that became one of the genre’s most important acts and wrote enduring anthems like ‘Heart of Gold’ and ‘Pretty Green Eyes’. Alongside peers such as Dougal and Hixxy, Force & Styles helped turn happy hardcore into a movement.
Chart hits and a solo career
In the early 2000s, Styles teamed with Mark Brady as Styles & Breeze, pushing a more trance-influenced sound that broke into the mainstream: ‘You’re Shining’ (2004) and ‘Heartbeatz’ (2005) both reached the UK Top 20. He then built a prolific solo career, releasing on and running his own labels, and his emotive, vocal-driven productions became a template for modern happy hardcore.
Still headlining
Decades in, Styles remains one of the most in-demand names in the scene, a frequent collaborator with Gammer and a fixture on UK and international lineups. His catalogue keeps growing, with recent tracks like ‘Hard Beat’ and a steady run of 2025 singles landing here as they drop.
