Dune

Dune bottled the moment happy hardcore crossed into the pop charts. Founded in 1995 by DJ Oliver Froning with producers Jens Oettrich and Bernd Burhoff (and named after Frank Herbert’s sci-fi epic), the German project’s very first single became its signature.

‘Hardcore Vibes’

That debut, ‘Hardcore Vibes’, filled club floors through the summer of 1995 and climbed to No. 5 on the German singles chart. Thirty years on it still defines the project: it remains Dune’s most popular track on Spotify in HDRR’s tracking, kept alive by generations of hard-dance DJs who treat it as ancestral text.

The hit machine

Dune became one of the most successful acts of Germany’s chart-techno wave, collecting Gold and Platinum for ‘Can’t Stop Raving’, ‘Million Miles From Home’, ‘Rainbow To The Stars’, ‘Hand In Hand’, ‘Are You Ready To Fly’ and ‘Who Wants To Live Forever’, many carried by singer Verena von Strenge. The formula: rave tempos of 140-160 BPM, euphoric synth hooks, zero cynicism.

Why Dune still matters

Modern happy hardcore and euphoric hardstyle both inherit Dune’s DNA: the conviction that maximum speed and maximum melody belong together, an idea running straight through to today’s revivalists and era peers like Paul Elstak and S3RL.
