B-Front (Bob van der Palen) was introduced to music at age 8, producing trance at 10 in a neighbour’s studio, and selling records worldwide at 15 with ‘Motherfucking Psycho / Jumpin’’ on DJS Records. Few careers in hardstyle started that early.

From ‘Lunatick’ to Defqon.1

His track ‘Lunatick’ charted in 2005, and by 2008 he was playing hardstyle at Defqon.1 for the first time. The real turning point was ‘Magic’ with Frontliner: two artists from opposite ends of the genre finding studio chemistry that opened a whole new avenue in B-Front’s sound: emotional melody carried by serious weight.

The Roughstate era

In 2015, Van der Palen co-founded Roughstate alongside Ran-D, Adaro and Frequencerz, and headlined his own X-Qlusive event in 2016. The label bond also became a stage act: with Frequencerz he performs as B-Freqz, one of raw’s heaviest-hitting live formations. His solo album ‘Beyond Reality’ (2017) cemented his reputation as rawstyle’s storyteller, followed by the collaborative albums ‘Eclipse’ (2018), ‘Other Planets’ (2023) and ‘The Enlightenment’ (2024).

Why he matters

B-Front’s signature is atmosphere: sets and records that treat raw energy as a canvas for melody rather than a substitute for it. That approach echoes through the whole Roughstate circle, from label-mates like Rejecta to the wider raw scene.
