What is Gabba?
Gabba (gabber, early hardcore, old-school) is where the whole hard dance family tree starts: Rotterdam, early 1990s, a Roland kick overdriven until it snarls, hoover stabs, chant samples and zero politeness. The word itself is Dutch slang for “mate”, and the culture around it (shaved heads, tracksuits, the hakken dance) remains one of the most distinctive youth movements the Netherlands ever produced.
Rotterdam against the world
Gabber took shape as the working-class answer to Amsterdam’s polished house scene. In 1992 Paul Elstak founded Rotterdam Records (the first Dutch hardcore label), and the sound exploded through halls like Energiehal and events that would define the decade. Faster, cruder and prouder than anything around it, gabber became the root system from which hardcore, uptempo and half the styles on this site later grew. If the two names blur together for you, hardcore vs gabber sorts them out.
The revival
The classic sound never really died, and since the 2010s a deliberate early-hardcore revival has pulled it back into clubs - new productions that lean proudly into the 90s aesthetic: raw kicks, hoovers and short, shouted hooks. On HDRR’s radar the feed is dominated by Dione, the most prolific name in our gabber tracking by a wide margin, alongside institutions like Rotterdam Terror Corps and Ruffneck, with veterans such as Neophyte and Evil Activities keeping one foot in the old school.
The sound
One kick to rule them all: a Roland 909 driven into total distortion, four to the floor at 160-190 BPM. Around it, little more than stabs, screams and samples. Gabber’s genius is its brutal economy. If it makes you want to hakken, it’s working.

Questions,answered
Where can I find new gabber releases?
This page lists every new gabber / early-hardcore release on Spotify that HDRR tracks, updated daily. Gabber tracks also flow into the Hardcore Release Radar playlist together with the rest of the hardcore family.
What does gabber mean?
Gabber comes from Dutch Bargoens slang and means 'mate' or 'friend'. In the early 1990s it became the name for Rotterdam's raw, fast form of hardcore techno, and for the shaved-head, tracksuit-wearing subculture around it.
Is gabber the same as hardcore?
Gabber is the original early-90s Rotterdam form of hardcore techno. The term is mostly used today for that classic, old-school sound and its modern revivals. Contemporary hardcore grew out of gabber but covers a much wider range of styles.
What BPM is gabber?
Classic gabber typically runs between 160 and 190 BPM, built on a four-to-the-floor kick overdriven until it distorts. Modern early-hardcore revival tracks stay in the same range.
