New Frenchcore Releases

Frenchcore is the French answer to hardcore: around 200 BPM, a heavily distorted kick that bounces on the off-beat instead of stomping on the grid, and, unusually for something this fast, real melody. The result is hard dance’s most danceable extreme, equal parts relentless and playful.

From the French underground

Frenchcore’s roots lie in France’s rave and freetekno scenes of the 1990s. Micropoint (founded by Radium and Al Core in 1992) is credited as the genre’s first act, and when Radium went solo he became its most significant early figure, founding Psychik Genocide, one of the first frenchcore labels. For years the sound stayed a French underground affair, faster and freer than the Dutch hardcore mainstream.

The Dutch embrace

The 2010s changed everything. Frenchcore found a second home in the Netherlands, and two artists carried it to the mainstages: Dr. Peacock, whose touring (including a 2016 US run) took the genre beyond Europe for the first time, and his protégé Sefa, whose 2018 debut album ‘Leven is Lijden’ introduced a generation of hardstyle fans to frenchcore. In 2019 Sefa produced the first frenchcore anthem in Defqon.1 history and closed the festival - the moment the genre’s arrival became official.

The sound: the bounce at 200

Frenchcore’s signature is its kick pattern: a distorted kick that lands on the off-beat, creating a gallop that has more in common with hardstyle’s reverse bass than with hardcore’s straight stomp. On top, producers layer surprisingly melodic leads, folk and chanson quotations, and vocals that swing from anthemic to absurd. It shares its 200 BPM range with uptempo but almost none of its temperament. Frenchcore smiles where uptempo snarls.

The scene today

Beyond Dr. Peacock and Sefa, the modern wave runs through Billx, Vandal, Darktek and Remzcore, with the French and Dutch scenes now thoroughly intertwined.
