What is Frenchcore?

Every new Frenchcore release on Spotify is collected here daily - the latest tracks from the French and Dutch scenes alike. Frenchcore is hardcore with a bouncing off-beat kick at around 200 BPM: melodic, relentless and unmistakably French.

Frenchcore is the French answer to hardcore: around 200 BPM, a heavily distorted kick that bounces on the off-beat instead of stomping on the grid, and, unusually for something this fast, real melody. The result is hard dance’s most danceable extreme, equal parts relentless and playful.

From the French underground

Frenchcore’s roots lie in France’s rave and freetekno scenes of the 1990s. Micropoint (founded by Radium and Al Core in 1992) is credited as the genre’s first act, and when Radium went solo he became its most significant early figure, founding Psychik Genocide, one of the first frenchcore labels. For years the sound stayed a French underground affair, faster and freer than the Dutch hardcore mainstream.

The Dutch embrace

The 2010s changed everything. Frenchcore found a second home in the Netherlands, and two artists carried it to the mainstages: Dr. Peacock, whose touring (including a 2016 US run) took the genre beyond Europe for the first time, and his protégé Sefa, whose 2018 debut album ‘Leven is Lijden’ introduced a generation of hardstyle fans to frenchcore. In 2019 Sefa produced the first frenchcore anthem in Defqon.1 history and closed the festival - the moment the genre’s arrival became official.

The sound: the bounce at 200

Frenchcore’s signature is its kick pattern: a distorted kick that lands on the off-beat, creating a gallop that has more in common with hardstyle’s reverse bass than with hardcore’s straight stomp. On top, producers layer surprisingly melodic leads, folk and chanson quotations, and vocals that swing from anthemic to absurd. It shares its 200 BPM range with uptempo but almost none of its temperament. Frenchcore smiles where uptempo snarls.

The scene today

Beyond Dr. Peacock and Sefa, the modern wave runs through Billx, Vandal, Darktek and Remzcore, with the French and Dutch scenes now thoroughly intertwined.

Questions, answered

Where can I find new frenchcore releases?

This page lists every new frenchcore release on Spotify, updated daily. To listen, follow the Frenchcore Release Radar playlist, which collects the same new tracks every day.

What BPM is frenchcore?

Frenchcore is usually produced around 200 BPM. Despite the speed it feels bouncy rather than punishing, thanks to its signature off-beat kick pattern.

What makes frenchcore different from hardcore?

The kick placement. Frenchcore puts a bouncing, distorted kick on the off-beat (closer to hardstyle's reverse-bass groove than to hardcore's relentless four-to-the-floor) and combines it with far more melody than most hardcore styles.

Where did frenchcore come from?

Frenchcore grew out of the French rave and free-party scenes of the 1990s. Micropoint, founded by Radium and Al Core in 1992, is considered the first frenchcore act, and Radium's Psychik Genocide became one of the genre's first labels.

Who are the biggest frenchcore artists?

Dr. Peacock and Sefa brought frenchcore to the world's biggest hard dance stages, alongside Billx, Vandal, Darktek and Remzcore. Sefa produced the first frenchcore Defqon.1 anthem in 2019.

When do new frenchcore tracks come out?

Most new frenchcore tracks come out on a Friday, with a smaller wave the day before, on Thursday. The genre releases less often than the bigger hard dance styles, so a typical week brings a few new tracks rather than dozens.

How is this list built?

HDRR keeps a hand-picked list of more than 3,000 hard dance artists on Spotify and checks all of them for new releases every day. Tracks are sorted by their artist's genre, so a new release by a frenchcore artist appears here. The list does not include artists HDRR does not follow, or tracks that are unreleased or still upcoming.

How do I get new frenchcore releases every week?

The free HDRR newsletter sends a summary every Monday of the past week's releases in the sub-genres you select. On Spotify, the Frenchcore Release Radar playlist adds new tracks daily, and on Instagram @hdrr.info posts a daily story with the latest drops.
