What is Uptempo?

Every new Uptempo release lands on this radar the day it hits Spotify - one of the highest release volumes in hard dance, updated daily. Uptempo is hardcore pushed past 200 BPM: overdriven kicks, screeches and zero compromise.

Uptempo hardcore (usually just “uptempo”) is the fastest-growing extreme of hard dance: hardcore accelerated past 200 BPM, with overdriven, mid-forward kicks that dominate the entire frequency spectrum, harsh screeches and next to no melody. It is deliberately too much, and that is exactly the point. Uptempo vs hardcore marks exactly where one ends and the other begins.

Born on the B-sides

Uptempo’s origin story belongs to Partyraiser, the Dutch DJ who made a signature of playing the faster, rougher B-sides of hardcore records, pitched up and sped up further still. During the early 2010s that DJ habit solidified into a production style of its own, and “uptempo” became the accepted name for hardcore that starts where the mainstream ends. What began as an underground in-joke grew, within a decade, into sold-out events and dedicated festival stages across the hardcore world.

The sound: kicks over everything

Uptempo production is an arms race in kick design. The kicks are overdriven until they carry the whole track, hitting relentlessly at 200+ BPM, decorated with terse vocal chops, horror-film samples and dissonant stabs rather than melodies. Around 2019, artists like The Dark Horror began experimenting with the formula (different pitches, punchless and lower-frequency kicks, even slower passages), keeping a deliberately extreme genre creatively restless. Past uptempo’s upper limits lies speedcore, the only place left to go faster.

The scene today

Alongside Partyraiser and The Dark Horror, the current wave is carried by Deadly Guns, Spitnoise and GPF, with a steady stream of new producers arriving. Uptempo’s release volume is among the highest in hard dance, which makes a daily radar genuinely useful. The genre also trades ideas freely with frenchcore, its 200 BPM neighbour with a bouncier, more melodic temperament. Its fastest-growing offshoot is Deutscher Krach, the euphoric German-language wave founded by Noiseflow in 2023, which swaps uptempo’s darkness for big melodies and party humour.

Questions, answered

Where can I find new uptempo releases?

This page lists every new uptempo hardcore release on Spotify, updated daily. To listen, follow the Uptempo Release Radar playlist, which collects the same new tracks every day.

What BPM is uptempo?

Uptempo hardcore typically runs from around 185 to 220 BPM and frequently pushes past 200. At its most extreme it approaches terrorcore and speedcore territory.

Who invented uptempo hardcore?

The style is widely credited to Dutch DJ Partyraiser, who became known for pitching up and speeding up the B-sides of hardcore records. That habit hardened into its own faster, harsher style, and the name 'uptempo' stuck in the early 2010s.

What is the difference between uptempo and hardcore?

Uptempo is hardcore's faster, rougher extreme: mainstream hardcore usually sits between 160 and 200 BPM, while uptempo starts where that ends. The kicks are more overdriven and mid-forward, the melodies more minimal, and the samples darker.

Who are the biggest uptempo artists?

Partyraiser remains the godfather of the style, with The Dark Horror, Deadly Guns, Spitnoise and GPF among the biggest current names.

When do new uptempo tracks come out?

Uptempo releases mostly arrive on Friday, with a smaller wave on Thursday. Only a few new tracks come out from Monday to Wednesday, and weekends are quieter still.

How is this list built?

The list comes from more than 3,000 hand-picked hard dance artists that HDRR follows on Spotify and checks for new releases every day. A track's genre is taken from its artist, which is how it lands on this uptempo page. What it leaves out: tracks by artists HDRR does not follow, and anything not yet released on Spotify.

How do I get new uptempo releases every week?

Subscribe to the free HDRR newsletter for a Monday email with the past week's releases in your chosen sub-genres, or follow the Uptempo Release Radar playlist on Spotify to hear new tracks as they arrive. The @hdrr.info Instagram account also posts the day's new releases as a story.
