New Hard Techno Releases

Hard techno is techno with the safety off: 145-160+ BPM, rumbling distorted kicks, industrial textures and grooves built for warehouse hysteria rather than club subtlety. In the 2020s it grew from an underground revival into one of the dominant sounds of European rave culture.

From schranz to the new wave

Hard techno’s first golden age came out of Germany around the turn of the millennium as schranz, the stripped, loop-driven, percussion-heavy school of hard techno that filled German warehouses through the 2000s. The current wave is a genuine revival: it blossomed in the European scene of the early 2020s, rooted in the post-2020 Berlin warehouse world and accelerated by the pandemic, first through illegal raves, then through a surge of demand for harder, faster music when clubs reopened. Formats like the Netherlands’ Verknipt turned it into a festival phenomenon.

The sound: rumble and release

The modern style is built on the “rumble” kick (a distorted kick whose tail rolls under the whole track), layered with schranz-style driving percussion, industrial noise and, in its most popular form, big melodic hooks borrowed from 1990s trance. That trance inheritance is what separates this wave from its predecessors: today’s hard techno swings between punishment and euphoria, often inside one track. At its fastest it borders the tempos of hardcore; at its most melodic it crosses into straight techno crossover territory. It shares festival stages with hardstyle without sharing its DNA, a distinction unpacked in hardstyle vs hard techno.

The names of the wave

Sara Landry stands out as the wave’s defining figure, alongside I Hate Models, Nico Moreno, Deborah de Luca and the punk-leaning Brutalismus 3000. The scene’s centres of gravity are Berlin, Paris and the Dutch festival circuit, and its release volume has grown to match its crowds.
